Paper Proposals, Ideas, Questions, Thoughts and other Miscellany

This is the spot, folks.  Your Gladwellian notions and queries can all go here.  This is a collegial space where everyone is encouraged to offer thoughtful advice and ideas on each other's work.
In college, this skill is integral in your own personal success.  For a more concrete example, I offer the confounding fact that 50% of one of my grad class's  grade is comprised of my interactions with my fellow scholars.
So, there you have it.
Mingle!

    3. I really like this idea. It's something I would have never thought of but totally agree with (at least I agree with what I think you're going to write about).

    4. I guess that there is connection between Nike and needs. When I read this I thought it would make sense to replace needs with Sweatshops, but I guess Needs makes sense too. Nike makes billions of dollars from people who buy things that are useless in China or in any of its Asian factories. There are million articles that can contribute to the corruption of big industries seeking cheap labor if you choose this topic.

    5. Wow, thanks for all the positive feedback everyone! It sort of makes me feel bad to say that i changed my topic. Its is now What iPhone's can Teach us about image. This topic ended up being a lot easier to work with and to find research sources for but also i have been able to work in the basic idea of my original topic into this one so it turned out to be a more layered topic and argument.

  3. I'm almost 100% positive I'm writing my essay all wrong. I'm writing about what "fans can teach about dedication" and it's sorta cliché but I really want to talk about this because I've got some really interesting ideas and stuff BUT I have no idea how to write it. I have no idea how to write it in that I don't know what to say first and how to effectively make everything, for lack of a better word, flow. If anyone has some suggestions, feel free to comment!

    1. Paula, despite the fact that is sorta cliché, I think it makes a lot more sense when given some thoughts. As an Athlete, there is always hope when you see people cheering you up even to the point when you think the game is lost. I can give you a perfect example, remember the Miami heat VS San Antonio Spurs, think of how the fans reacted even before Ray Allen took the game to game 7 and they even ended up winning the championship. Seriously, I think it is a great idea. Good job.

    2. I think your topic makes sense, but I think it isn't a metephor. I think--if you would want to change your title--your title should be like a actor or a singer who hasn't been so successful and then link it to dedication. I haven't written my essay, because I have been fickle about the process and I don't know what my title should be.

    3. While your comments were appreciated, I don't think you guys understood my question or my topic. I think that's mostly on my part since I didn't really explain it well but I wanted to talk about what fans have to do, pay, and go through just to support their favorite artist or to try and meet them. I've got a personal anecdote and I've got other incite on the topic. I think I can make it work, I just don't necessarily know how yet. My question is, how do I go about writing this? I'm terrible at doing things "freely."

    4. I totally know what you mean in terms of having difficulty with writing an essay "freely". Sometimes I find myself longing for a rubric or guidelines to follow. But I have been able to make some headway with my own essay and I think I can offer a token of advice. Over the weekend I really struggled with getting my essay started, but I found that starting with a vague point or personal anecdote and then expanding worked best for me. I attempted to somewhat follow Gladewell's essay in providing a very literal story and then following it up with more abstract details and ideas. I hope this helps a little.

  4. I have being debating with myself on what I should write my essay on. I decided to watch the news for some inspiration but nothing excited me. Furthermore, I thought using Nelson Mandela would be a great idea but I realized that I would just be writing about his legacy, and though it might seem genius, is not because that is what actually he stood for. however, as a result of these mind puzzling thoughts, I have decided to finally write my paper on What the Bible can teach us about Faith and Sacrifices.

    1. While at first glance that topic could be viewed as too straight forward and broad i really think if you use not only the source material of the Bible itself but also outside stories of people holding true to their faith you could really write a solid paper about faith, sacrifices and how those tie into the values that hold humanity together.

    2. Correct me if you want, but I'm pretty sure Bunje said that our title should be metephors. I think that your title is very specific and you wouldn't be able to broaden the definition of what you think Faith and Sacrifices. Faith and Sacrifice can entail a juxtapostion problem.

  5. Tis the season…right? I know this may sound very cliché, but I have been thinking about so many topics I can cover on my What Blank Can Teach Us about Blank and the one that sticks to me the most is What Pine Trees Can Teach Us about Family Characteristics (I am still working on the title). Beginning the busy and joyous Holiday season, every family that celebrates Christmas puts up a Christmas tree that satisfies them and gives a representation of their characteristics. A plain pine tree that is ready to be decorated is the same as a blank and white canvas, what you put on the canvas or the tree in this case expresses you or your family. If a family decorates their empty canvas with bright blues, then the family is probably is a family that is deep and sincere. If a family chooses to decorate in a Victorian theme, then the family has a deep history. I think that my topic is really vague because you cannot really be specific if a family is a certain way, so I know I may have to change my topic, but for the time being this is what I have.

  7. Guys, tell me what you think about this: what life can teach us about faith and sacrifices.

    1. faith and sacrifices can sound a bit vague and i cant seem to think of a good part for the first blank. but faith and sacrifice are two things that make up the Human condition. So what if you wrote what _____ can teach us about the human condition. This would let your talk about faith and sacrifice because those are both things that can define people, but it is also a much more broad topic because the second blank is supposed to be broad. Sorry that i cant help with the first blank but i hope my input helped a little.

  11. What Celebrities Can Teach Us About Speech?

    1. I intend to explore the recent instances of controversy regarding celebrity statements and connect that with the larger controversy of the Freedom of Speech in general, of course being able to cite the bevy of Supreme Court cases available. Perhaps I might expand it to talk about the very nature of rights and their inherent mutability and assumptions, which is sort of alluded to in that C.S. Lewis article. Sound legit?
